Doctor of Acupuncture and Owner of On-Point Recovery

Meet Dr. Kenya Downey

Dr. Kenya Downey is a holistic healthcare expert who specializes in orthopedic pain management and sports recovery. She has 10 years of collective clinical experience in physical therapy, athletic training, and acupuncture settings. After earning her Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from Towson University in 2022, she pursued her Master and Doctor of Acupuncture degrees in an effort to merge her passions for sport and niche healthcare approaches. She graduated from Virginia University of Integrative Medicine in 2026. Kenya grew up playing sports herself, including soccer and running track as a sprinter. Today, physical fitness remains a crucial element of her lifestyle. She's a die-hard sports fan as well, with her favorites to watch being football and basketball. She also has experience coaching youth gymnastics. Kenya was first influenced by acupuncture as a patient. She originally explored acupuncture to help manage stress and her mental health. However, acupuncture as a career interest truly took shape after she experienced its therapeutic effect on chronic low back pain and, eventually, two spinal fractures. "I had struggled with my low back virtually my whole life. Whether it was because I played contact sports growing up, unchecked postural issues, a uterus, or all of the above is unclear...but I was always in pain and not a single specialist I pursued for relief understood why. All anyone could recommend to me was weight loss, cocktails of painkillers, back braces, and physical therapy. I was never truly pain-free while exploring western medicine options alone. I also understood that sacrificing the health of my organs for pills every day was not a sustainable option. The takeaway became learning how to function through my discomfort until the day came when I could no longer get out of bed on my own. By this point, I became a candidate for an invasive spinal fusion surgery at only 22 years old. The success rate of such a procedure and the length of the healing process terrified me, especially as an active individual in my 20's who was navigating college away from home. I knew there had to be more to life than this." Kenya reconnected with her acupuncturist as a Hail Mary. Surely enough, it only took a single treatment to achieve her first pain-free few days. The more she visited, the longer the effects lasted. Eventually she was able to tolerate physical therapy again, which supplemented her recovery even more. "As a natural skeptic, I was awestruck. To this day, there is no one more deserving of credit for such a life-changing experience than my acupuncturist. It didn't take long for me to decide I wanted to do the same for others." Kenya wants athletes to know that they are more than just their stats and sideline productivity under her care. She hopes to be a beacon for those who get turned away when their conditions are dismissed as "too complex." She says, "Don't let anyone tell you that your pain or discomfort isn't meaningful just because it doesn't fit into a predetermined box of measurements and values. Wellness is a spectrum and the human experience is multidimensional. The mind, body, and spirit are all interconnected parts of a whole that cannot function without one another." Kenya believes that when the body is treated as such, the best versions of ourselves are unlocked. Despite her primary focus being the active population and elite athletes, the holistic nature of acupuncture treatment and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) allows her to treat any person, any age, even if they're not quite sure where physical activity fits into their life. She is enthusiastic about inclusivity and treating a number of other conditions unrelated to sport. Extracurricularly, Kenya enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, traveling, attending sporting events, music concerts, cozying up with a book, casual gaming, and watching her favorite thrillers on TV. She is a proud Soror of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and volunteers to serve her community on a regular basis. Kenya is also very passionate about advocacy for marginalized groups and humanitarian efforts.
